Firstword

With a strong leader at the helm of the country, issues that have been ailing the real estate and urban design community, will possibly be addressed. With plans for many Smart Cities on the anvil, the role of smart and sustainable design will become paramount. Our stories this issue string together a series of projects and insights that draw attention to a reinvigoration of design from the mundane, to that which fits into a larger game plan.

Our lead feature on security and automation showcases the burgeoning role of this essential ´smart´ element, both in security and in design. The J Plus Hotel in Hong Kong is definitely a smart style statement. A drop dead gorgeous design by yoo by Phillippe Starck is a highlight of this issue with gorgeous pieces of furniture, fabulous lighting and perky use of colour. A salute to Starck´s unique style for this one!

From the Milan fair, the mecca of furniture and design, we pick out furniture and dTcor pieces from across the world eclectic, unique, functional and whacky. Chromed design from Delhi, showcases optimal use of design in this residential project. With an excellent floor plan that exceeds the client´s expectation, this home is an intelligent use of material and space, with one enhancing the other.

Benihana, a Japanese restaurant chain in Delhi artfully fuses contemporary interiors with a vintage truck that serves as a bar; while a Zen-like office designed by Studio Creo has a beautiful straight-line design and an open, seamless approach. Spread across four floors, this office has an expansive look and feel, in keeping with the brief. Furthermore, showcasing efficient office furniture options is a special feature on practical and functional modular furniture.

Bringing more insight into design, Gaurav Roy Chaudhury from Bengaluru talks about spaces that are honest in their offering. And in Mumbai, Kavita Singh Interiors, a new store by interior designer Kavita Singh and her daughter, has a treasure trove of ideas whilst housing some of the finest furniture and art in the city.

Smart planning, smart design, smart buildingsà.a beginning to the smart cities on the anvil.
