Wine and Dine

The informal interiors of The Wine Company seem to have been inspired by a Martin Luther quote ´Beer is made by men, wine by God.´
It was the romance of wine that inspired the owners of The Wine Company Cyber Hub in Gurgaon to spearhead the concept of a wine bistro in the country. Located at the DLF, The Wine Company is a recreation of a Parisian bistro in the heart of India´s newest business hub. The bistro draws attention with its signage itself visualised by creative director Freddy Birdy, the wine glass shaped ´in the restaurant´s logo symbolises the spirit of the establishment quite succinctly!

The owner of this cafe, Ajay Saini, is an old hand and a pioneer of sorts in the hospitality business. He had introduced the first nightclub in the National Capital Region (NCR) and started restaurants offering Thai cuisine in the nineties, much before the cuisine gained pan-India popularity. This time, his instinct dictated that the time was ripe for a wine bistro to set up shop in the country. And thus, the first wine bistro, spread over 5,500 sq ft, came into being.

Open street
At first glance, one is struck by the informality of the restaurant´s design, with its exposed brick work, chalk boards, chesterfield sofas, wine-related paraphernalia and oak wood barrels. The outdoor area has 70 covers and is designed to look like an open street cafe; inside, the restaurant seats 150.

Rashi Monga, Marketing Consultant of The Wine Company, says, ´The open seating area keeps the romance going and removes the intimidation one may some¡times feel in restaurants. Some eateries have such heavy interiors that they overpower the concept and the food. We have kept it deliberately simple so that the focus does not sway away from what is on the plate.´

Wine and associated images are definitely in the limelight here, with planters in the open area placed inside wine barrels and wine bottles lining the inside of one part of the restaurant´s fatade. Wine glasses adorn the tables, and the ´open´ design format beckons you to explore the interior.

Wine cellar
The indoor space of the restaurant has the look and ambience of a wine cellar. To the left is a retail zone selling around 150 varieties of wine stocked neatly in hardwood shelves. One can taste the wine before buying, sipping from tasting glasses perched atop barrels.

Hardwood tables line the entire length and breadth of the glass wall of the restaurant overlooking the open area outside. In the middle is the buffet counter and opposite is the 40 ft bar counter. The bar counter, with an Italian marble top, has the backdrop of a rustic exposed brick wall. Black bar stools surround the counter, and black studio lights above complete the picture. A live music area next to the bar comes alive in the evenings. The cemented flooring further accentuates the feeling of a wine cellar. One step higher than the cemented floor is another seating area that has wine buckets and coffee sacks on the backdrop wall, in keeping with the theme of the restaurant. Every part of the restaurant is thus designed to keep the guests in high spirits. Wine knocks the cork out of the bottle.
