Maldives Institute of Technical Education (MITE)

Water Woes
In Maldives, we designed a technical training institute which was sponsored by the Government of India. This involved building laboratories, classrooms and workshops along with a library, computer rooms, seminar rooms and some academic facilities. The project was executed in late ยด80s. The building design took into account the hot and humid climatic conditions of Male. As the island state is barely one meter above sea level, there is no natural source of water here other than sea water at very shallow depths. Hence, rain water harvesting is a traditional practice on this island. On this project, the entire roof water, after the initial flushing, was collected and used for drinking, cooking and washing. The grey water falling on the ground was also collected and re-used after initial filtration for flushing, landscaping and water conservation.
