Rock solid

Haptic Architects use a ribbed concept inspired by natural surroundings to design Arkwright's corporate office in Norway.

In an old converted warehouse building on the prime harbour front Aker Brygge in Oslo, Norway, is Arkwright's corporate office.London-based Haptic Architects have refurbished a part of the warehouse to create for this office a one-of-its-kind work ambience - a perfect fusion of comfort, functionality and elegance.

First glance

With a large arched window as its centre piece, the office of the strategy and corporate finance organisation is heavily inspired from the eroded granite rock formations found along the Norwegian coastline. A mammoth black timber-slatted reception area greets visitors at the entrance on the top floor. The spaced out slats in the background spread to form a curved wall that acts as a canvas for the office space behind it.

Moving on, the canvas descends down a double height ceiling to the spacious lounge area which offers ample space for seating and interaction. Scattered across the area is edgy layered furniture in shades of blue, brown and black, which pleasantly complement the white-washed walls. These walls reflect the natural light soaking in through the large arched window overlooking the lake to brighten up the space. Pleasantly lit office spaces with warm welcoming colours are currently in vogue, as these lend an informal touch to the place without being too obvious.

Secret space

Moving on, Haptic has managed to create a distinctive work environment so that employees can work efficiently and also get a chance to relax during breaks. This concept has been transformed into reality by means of a James Bond-themed executive lounge: a windowless bunker-like space. A secret door - a book rack embedded into one of the walls - swivels to allow employees inside. It is an ideal space for quiet contemplation as it creates a private, intimate and calming atmosphere. With an elegant brown colour palette, the room oozes utmost comfort and elegance. While a television has been fixed one wall of the room, the other contains a bar and fridge!

Now, who would not want to work in this office?
