First word

“While nothing succeeds like success, the landslide electoral win for the Samajwadi Party in UP and Sachin’s 100th hundred show how understanding consumer psyche and perseverance, respectively, can take you all the way.

Both of these came into play when we deliberated upon our Feature on Contemporary Homes. Understanding the need of the end user in terms of design and cost, and persevering to get it right, using the palette of latest materials and technology, were our key takeaways from the CW Interiors RoundTable that we organised to deliberate on the subject. All connotations, impressions of the word contemporary and how they manifested were expressed by our 14 elite Round Table members – comprising architects, designers and industry professionals –  in an animated discussion that could have gone on for much longer than just three hours! Our feature story attempts to encapsulate everyone’s thoughts…

Taking this thought further is Pune-based Architect Sunil Patel who designs homes that are defined as contemporary vernacular. He shares four homes that he has designed which reflect this style of architecture; and he has used materials sourced from a 50 km radius, thus adding eco-friendly to the definition of contemporary. Another contemporary offering is the newly-opened all day diner, Lagerbay,  in Bandra, Mumbai. Designed by a young and enthusiastic design firm – Studio Caravan – the diner has an American pub vibe, graphics, innovative materials and a whole lot of tasteful accents that mark the décor. The product spread too is on fusion furniture, which interestingly brings to light many aspects of contemporary design.
Striving to present a diverse mix, the vibrant Taj Vivanta in Coimbatore, the dramatic LEGO office in Denmark, the Edelweiss office in Mumbai, and a gorgeous home in Raipur, are an interesting combination. The Taj Vivanta is an ode to the warmth of Surya – the Sun; while the LEGO office by designer duo Rosan Bosch and Rune Fjord reflects the playful nature of its products. The office designed by Edifice Consultants for Edelweiss, a financial services firm, uses a sophisticated palette of materials that inspires confidence in the high-powered world of finance;  and the home designed by Pune-based Manthan Architects has a beautiful contemporary vocabulary with spaces that blend beautifully and have a visual connection.
The strife continues….let us know if it’s working for you…
