Stimulating Symmetry

David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates draws inspiration from fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic’s latest collection while designing her store in Mayfair, London.

The London-based Serbian fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic loves to play with geometry and symmetry in her design. Taking a cue from her penchant, David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates redesigned her store as an ode to her style.

To preserve the historic fabric of the existing space, the store is set like a box within the original frame. As visitors enter they are met with the former shop window, while a new glass screen ushers them to the inner entrance leading up to the contemporary intervention. The window display acts as an interim space between the old and the new.

Designing the details
Inside the new space, the walls are made of staggered concrete slabs that repeat as forms for the plinths. The layering is slightly irregular, giving the impression of a richly choreographed three dimensional pattern complemented by a composite marble herringbone parquet on the floor. The glass wall in the rear mirrors the screen at the front of the store. The overall neutral palette is marked with bursts of colour or mirroring effect and this serpentine colour trail helps visitors navigate the space. The free standing units are made of glossy lacquered joinery, rose gold stainless steel and concrete. The existing columns are wrapped in an angular diamond shaped casing made of soft reflective rose gold polished stainless steel.

On the lower level, the VIP lounge and office spaces are a mix of vibrant blocks of colour and soft finishes, contrasting the ground floor store space. The walls are fabric-panelled and each room has a distinct colour scheme – ranging from yellow, beige, pink to purple and maroon.

A gorgeous piece of symmetrical art, this store exudes class and style.
