Katran furniture witnesses a revival with an absolutely dashing collection by Jaypore.
Fabric waste comes into its own in the form of a vibrant furniture collection, Katran, designed by renowned designers Saahil and Sarthak. Popular for artisanal handmade furniture, the new collection by Jaypore is a scene-stealer. With its innate diversity of colour and texture, each piece of Katran furniture is a unique work of art Katran are small pieces of leftover colourful cloth, available in large quantities as scrap from cloth mills. Collected by farmers, these bits of cloth are spun into ropes and then sold to weave Khatiyas traditional Indian day beds.
The Katran furniture collection is rooted in a belief that products need to be practical while keeping the local traditions intact. This approach has resulted in the evolution of products that are beautiful yet functional. Sustainable and eco -friendly, this collection has a global and local appeal.
Quite fittingly, the Katran collection is slated to be exhibited at the India Now Exhibition in Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in 2015. We applaud the designers and artisans at Jaypore for taking Indian rustic arts to the world!
