Pronit Prem Nath, Principal Architect, Urban Studio

Having given the city of Mumbai some of the most fabulously designed night clubs and restaurants, Pronit Nath's forte and interest in hospitality is beautifully reflected in his designs. However, his firm's array of works ranges from residential, commercial, hospitality and retail to institutional sectors. Innovative, forward thinking and ecologically sound, most of his projects leave one awestruck. The most recent of his fantastic works is the Devi Ratn Hotel in Jaipur.

Why architecture?
I was exposed to the profession since childhood, as my father is an architect. I liked the fact that as an architect, one can do and enjoy so many varied things!

What role should the youth (architects) play, as things stand today?
Be true, be sustainable.

A piece of architecture that has had the most lasting impression on your mind...
Luis Kahn's Salk Institute.

A piece of architecture you simply hate!
All the past/neo modern, commercial builder buildings.

A philosophy of design you like to follow...
Being "GLOCAL".

Architecture you would like to create...
I would like to create architecture that has a direct positive impact on the public realm.

How do you think can we solve the problem of Indian architects aping western trends?
Recognise and award more locally contextual architecture and designs.

What would you like to be known as?
A decent architect and a good person.

Your most innovative design... still to come.

If you were not an architect, what would you be?
Never thought about it !!!
