Simple sophistication

Ankura and Ankit Patel of ANA Designs create a picture perfect office space for JLT India.
´You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.´ Only such an attitude can drive an institution, which encompasses 34 countries and is still growing. JLT India is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group, one of the world´s leading global insurance broking, employee benefits and consultancy firm. JLT approached Architects Ankura and Ankit Patel to design an open office with enough transparency in the overall infrastructure of the meeting space, interview and training rooms and conference area. The result was a distinctive and entrepreneurial workspace.

Making work fun
Spread across two wings in a total area of 1,20,000 sq ft, JLT is situated in the planned areas of Hiranandani at Powai, Mumbai. The talented design team of ANA Designs led by Ankura and Ankit Patel ensured that the office flaunts chic corporate interiors.

The corporate floor houses the workstations of senior members along with the conference and training areas. The architects have used linear desks for workstation areas and modular furniture for meeting and training rooms. The boardroom has a customised table, while the chairs and tables in the breakout area are thematic. With regards to lighting, all the workstation areas towards the glazing have day light sensors while tailored light fixtures are used to enhance the breakout areas and conference room. The four strategically placed breakout zones are one of the highlights of the interior design as they add a splash of colour and break the monotony. ´To complement the breakout zone, we have designed a customised light fixture that makes the space look stunning,´ shares Ankura.

There are also other interesting areas such as lounges and gaming zones to motivate the employees and make the office space lively. The cafeteria has a combination of open and air-conditioned spaces. It also has an exclusive space for the executive JLT members. The terrace offers a pictureque view that instantly captures your attention.

Designing the details
Some of the most successful office interiors make use of partitions in a fashion that stimulates employees by using variations in space. Office partitions can be configured in varying heights with different materials to emphasise an open and collaborative workspace. For JLT, glazed partitions with a minimalist design were used to augment the transparent and open office concept. ´We picked up a red band from their logo and used it as an element to highlight the transparent office spaces. The office design has an understated elegance defining the directness and eloquence of JLT´s culture,´ assert the architects.

A touch of wood
Good interiors with the right choice of material can say a lot about your business. ´We have used natural wooden rafter as a cladding material for the walls to add warmth to the space,´says Ankura. Since the whole office has a glazed partition dividing the space, it was essential to add character by incorporating wooden cladding and upholstered wooden chairs in the breakout area. The architects utilised the negative space touching the glazing with wooden benches to make the most of the scenic location.

JLT´s office design is an echo of Leonardo da Vinci´s words - simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
