Amit Porwal of Icon Projects makes Bikers Cafe, a restaurant in Kolkata, a must-visit place for bike lovers.
As its name suggests, The Bikers Cafe is a cafe cum lounge in Kolkata that sports an ´adda look´. Brainchild of Amit Porwal, a Mumbai-based designer, this restaurant offers an informal, rugged decor that appeals to the young and the young-at-heart alike.
A thrilling ride
Spread across 2800 sq ft, the highlights of the restaurant´s interiors include exposed concrete masonry walls, metal and rope false ceiling and distressed surface finish of blackstone on the floor. Ceiling mounted LED brackets are used to bounce light off the ceiling to add indirect lighting that is illuminating yet soft. A lot of attention has been paid to the designing of the seating area where elements of a bike are used to reinforce the theme. Specially sourced mango wood is used for enhanced effects. Interesting graphics that narrate ´a story of bikes and only bikes´ complete the picture.
Other bike elements that are incorporated in the design are primarily depicted as conversation starters. For instance, bike handles with head lamps are the light fixtures, the shock absorber with piston is used as the handle of the main door and number plates and petrol tanks are sliced and backlit to make wall murals. Gears and disk brakes are assembled and designed as a wall clock.
