Lighting the future

“We expect the lighting industry to grow at least by 15% CAGR over the next 4-5 years,” says Puneet Dhawan, Senior Vice President & Business Head, Lighting Business, Orient Electric.

Across the world, LED-based products have been showing strong growth trends, and India is no exception.

The Indian LED lighting market, with a turnover of more than Rs 2000 crore FY12-13, has been growing at a CAGR of more than 45%, and is expected to go up to 50%. With the initial growth led by the streetlight segment, LEDs have now gained acceptance among consumers who have realised the benefits of energy saving and maintenance-free life. Constant reduction in prices due to technological advances and increased scale of manufacturing has made the payback periods feasible for infrastructure and industrial customers.

We speak to Puneet Dhawan, Senior Vice President and Business Head for Lighting Business, Orient Electric. He comes with 24 years of experience in the lighting industry. Which are your popular lighting products?
Orient Electric’s product portfolio is mainly LED-centric and offers wide range of LED lighting products covering the SOHO, modern office and industrial segments. We also provide outdoor lighting solutions, covering street, flood and landscape lighting applications. Our most popular products are the new generation LED downlighters and panels. They owe their popularity to overall quality, good light output and attractive finish.

What kind of projects require LED fittings? Name your key clients.
Demand for LED fittings is growing at a rapid rate of 50% per year. Streetlighting products are high in demand due to government initiatives. Many civic and municipal organisations also back LED installations. Since last year, consumer segment has shown high demand for LED downlighters and lamps for use in homes and small commercial establishments. New industrial setups also prefer LED products. There is a significant increase in the number of projects in cement and textile industry demanding indoor linear LED fixtures (to replace FTL fixtures) and Highbay and Well Glass LED fittings instead of HID lamp fixtures.

Orient Electric is a regular supplier to government departments like MES, railways and municipalities. We also have orders from industrial customers like NEI, ABB, Honda, HIL and CMRI.

How cost effective are LED products?
We assure superior quality products and value for money to the consumers. Our products are competitively priced and we try to pass the benefit of our expertise in design onto the consumers.

The future of lighting is very bright with changing lifestyle and awareness on efficiency and environment. We expect the lighting industry to grow at least by 15% CAGR over the next 4-5 years.
