Godrej Interio recently launched an innovative " Out-of-the-Box" (OOB) workstation designed in collaboration with Plant 3 Studios Architecture, Mumbai.
This unit with two workstations has everything one will need - a pull-down laptop/desktop shelf, spacious CPU cabinet, drawer unit with stationery tray, two-tier personal storage area, switchboard for plugging in laptop/desktop, in-built flex LITE desktop lighting unit. And all of this come packed in a compact unit that can be opened with ease. It can also be closed and locked when not in use, facilitating multi-use of the space. There is more - OOB can be placed against wall and used by one person or placed in the centre, allowing two people to work simultaneously on either side. Provided with a handle and mounted on lockable castors it can also be towed to any part of an office.
This path breaking design developed by Planet 3 Studios won an award at the IIID-Godrej Innovation competition in 2007 for which it was originally designed). It was also adjudged as one of the three best furniture design in the 'Multiplicity' competition USA in 2008 and displayed at the Nuberger Museum of Art, New York.
"The design was inspired by the multi-functional Swiss Knife. 'Ready to use' was the most important parameter we kept in mind while designing the OOB followed closely by modularity, flexibility, mobility and ease of industrial production. The major challenge was in using the surface of the box as a jigsaw arrangement of components that unfold in a logical and sequential manner" reveals Kalhan Mattoo, Director, Planet 3 Studios.
Later Godrej team worked further on the design to make it a commercial reality. Priced at Rs 80,000, the unit is available at all Godrej Interio outlets in the country.
