Colour craze

The swanky new hotel Vivanta by Taj, at Dwarka in New Delhi desgined by Hong Kong based RAD Design Inc flaunts an international touch to the quintessence of Indian hospitality.
Vivanta by Taj ´ Dwarka is the 30th addition to the brand´s portfolio in the country and the 4th one in the Delhi/NCR. The property has been meticulously designed by Hong Kong-based RAD Design Inc, and shows an impressive presence of geometric patterns, which seamlessly embrace different spaces and elements within and outside the structure. From furniture design to carpet and from tiles to graphics, a strong design remains the common thread.

According to the team at RAD Design Inc, ´The design brief was to allow for the hotel to be expandable from floor area ratio 1 to floor area ratio 1.5 without undue waste and complexity, and without disturbing the hotel opera-¼tion. Furthermore, the design should define the essence of the new Vivanta brand.´

Globe trotter´s paradise
The design team at RAD is known for re-defining urbanism, with its cutting edge architecture, for emerging cities in South Asia. In keeping with this maxim, it has designed the structure of Vivanta by Taj´ Dwarka as an unfolding Origami. The hotel sits on 7 acres of land leading into a 6,000 sq ft progressive lobby, 250 guest rooms including 18 suites and a luxurious presidential Nirvana suite spanning across 5 floors. The striking aspects of the design are the use of geometrical patterns and the visual integration of the outdoors with the interiors.

´We deeply believe in the integration between interior and architecture. To assert this continuity we used a ´geometric coherence´ that can be read throughout the hotel, encompassing its architecture and interior, seamlessly embracing different spaces and effortlessly spanning across different scales, from furniture design to carpet, from tiles to graphics,´ explain the designers.

En suite pleasures
While geometry continues to dominate the interior design in the guest rooms, the young, informal and sensual ambience also contributes towards the vibrant image of the Vivanta brand. The 250 guest rooms are defined as ´edge of the art´, while the Nirvana presidential suite takes luxury to unparalleled levels.

The rooms are designed to look like modern day abodes with jagged angles in the roof and walls, complemented with geometric patterns on the carpet,´ says Anil Malhotra, GM, Vivanta by Taj, Dwarka.

The bathrooms were conceived as 'cave' like, hollowed from rock, with minimal additional materials and fittings, to immerse the guest in the bathing ritual. Creo the all-day dining restaurant features an interactive kitchen, while The Indus Express has an old-world charm, while Caramel Deli and Tipple Bar offer the guests a fun experience and beautiful views. The Rhythm Lounge boasts a well-equipped business centre, convention and soiree spaces across more than 15,000 sq ft, both indoor and outdoor dolloped by a massive ballroom Tango that stands tall at 27 feet. The hotel also features Jiva Spa.

The lobby, which is a progressive, extended living room with suspended chandeliers and dramatic design flourishes as well as interplays of light, space and fixtures. Similarly the Onyx elevator section has feature walls and pod seats, giving the space an ultra-modern look.

Elaborating more on the design aspect, the RAD team says, ´Design process and execution is our favourite aspect. We loved the design process, picking materials in local stores and working with local contractors to improve design, discovering what is achievable what not, seeing progress in everybody´s skills during the mock-up phase. We are proud of a design that evolved to incorporate various feedbacks from the management still keeping its original intention.´

Meeting challenges
´This 300 metre long site in Dwarka presented an unusual challenge in hotel design, while also providing a great opportunity for Taj to develop an impressive landmark in this new and growing district. By breaking down the mass, the scale of the building becomes understandable, and each rock-like block was varied in design to emphasise its individuality. The use of a consistent geometry and materials across the intricately carved façades ensures that the building is a collection of individual parts within a coherent overall design,´ affirm the designers.

´With energetic spaces, unique motifs, the smart use of technology, it is an ideal hotel for any business traveller. The hotel also offers more than 17,000 sq ft of flexible meeting and event facilities. The design infuses geometry, asymmetry and facets such as the leitmotifs beautifully to tell a unique design story,´ says Malhotra.

Vivanta by Taj ´ Dwarka portrays an invigorating combination of nature and geometric designs that based on state-of-the art architecture.
