The RIBA-´s (Royal Institute of British Architects) regional awards are widely seen as a hint to the even more eagerly anticipated RIBA Stirling Prize, announced later in the year. The 33 winning projects are varied including private houses as well as large-scale developments such as the Shard by Renzo Piano and the London Aquatics Centre Zaha Hadid. 173 entries led to 64 building nominations spread across various categories such as Commercial, Housing, as well as Community and Arts.
The most prestigious prize - London Architect of the Year was taken home by the London-based practice Haworth Tompkins for its numerous and high quality projects in the UK. Some great works include eye-catching projects such as the Shed at the National Theatre and the Clothworkers´ Centre for the Victoria and Albert Museum.
