Tale of Two Worlds

N Bar and Grill by Sumessh Menon + Associates showcases an exemplary restaurant which caters to guests with different tastes.

The design of Natraj Hospitality´s latest venture in Chembur, N Bar and Grill is interior designer Sumessh Menon´s latest creation. The restaurant serves a fusion of Indian and European cuisine, and the designer has reflected this food style in the interior design with great panache. While overt and typical Indians motifs have been avoided, indigenous design elements do appear subtly in stylised and westernised forms. The 2,100 sq ft space is divided into a large fine-dining restaurant with a private dining area, and an interconnected lounge bar with a separate entrance. The main entrance sets the tone with a white grc trellis. This design element not only forms an attractive entry point, but also provides some seclusion from neighbouring businesses and passers-by. The slatted wooden strips along the length of the glass fatade create privacy even as they keep the diners connected with the outside world.

Beautifully eclectic
The wooden doors which lead guests into the restaurant have a grid of magnifying glasses inset in them, an interesting complement to the semi-transparent fatade. A backlit reception table in front of a partitioning screen, both clad with laser-cut leather, greets the guest upon entry. The Brescia Aurora Italian marble flooring in the reception area flows into the restaurant and private dining areas. Brown leather coupled with dark wood sets a solemn and aesthetic tone.

A wall patterned with differently treated glass, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, separates the dining area from the bar. The area is lit by perforated and hammered bucket lamps suspended from the ceiling, which focus the light on the textured veneer table top below. The wall at the back has a larger-than-life mural of a woman´s face; texture-treated, partly hand made and partly printed, it looks much like a painting on canvas.

Customised style
Dull gold hues on the walls and plush velvet chairs speak of ornate luxury. Wave-like layers in hammered brass adorn the wall space of the three-pod seating area. Crescent-shaped sofas surround the tables, which have tops that are finished in laser-cut veneer. Suspended above the tables are customised polygonal lamps with a gold plated metal arc surrounding them. With their stone-like solid appearance, this feature forms the highlight of the room.

Lifting the spirits
The bar is in the adjoining room. With an interesting light box appearance, diagonally cut tobacco Italian marble slabs are arranged on backlit onyx to create a floating apron. The wooden back of the bar flows into the ceiling to replicate a wave. With spot lights fixed on the undulating ceiling and with high top tables and low colourful stools below, the space creates an inviting ambience for a relaxed drink.

Menon has brought together unusual materials, different textures and eclectic forms into a fusion design for the N´ Bar and Grill, giving this Mumbai suburb a unique restaurant with world class quality and ambience.
