Ravi Sarangan & Sanjay Srinivasan: Edifice Consultants

Ravi Sarangan & Sanjay Srinivasan

Firm: Edifice Consultants

"Architecture is all about possessing the right attitude, which helps in defining goals. An architect is also an artist and must balance the two sensibilities. A project demands Function, while the designer desires Form. The right attitude postulates that function is sacrosanct; the ideal design would find the most aesthetic solution possible, without any compromise on functionality. The design must fulfill the client's requirements and achieve the character desired by him. Within the confines of the brief, the architect must infuse creativity and lateral thinking into the design to achieve uniqueness.

Our design goals are efficiency, distinctiveness, timelessness and practicality. Proper orientation and placement of spaces ensures high levels of space utilisation, minimal and efficient circulation, maintainability and energy efficiency. Our design should be a response to the extant site conditions and client requirements, not a reflection of the architect's style. We eschew stylised or faddish designing; instead, we advocate 'honest design' - that is, the use of pure forms based on function and judicious exposure of structural materials to infuse character. The design becomes practical when it uses readily available and easily workable material, and when it does not demand high levels of precision in workmanship or controlled conditions for execution."

Born in a garage in Chembur, Mumbai, Edifice Consultants is today one of India's largest design consultancy firms with a direct presence in eight cities in the country, strength of over 280 design and construction professionals and a client list that consists of the who's who of India's corporate world. Come a long way, haven't they?

Ravi's & Sanjay's Diary

Before starting our own practice we were...Students at Sir JJ College of Architecture.

We started our own practice because...We had a format in mind that was not in existence in 1987 - the year we graduated.

Our firm believes that...Our designs will be sensitive to the context, client and environment, and we will be proud of every project that we deliver.

Our most creatively satisfying projects are...Almost all the projects that are on the drawing board now.

The turning point in our career...Came when we were invited by Narayana Murthy to design a software development centre for Infosys in 1996.

Experience has taught us that...The industry is fragmented, and transparency is seriously lacking.

A piece of architecture (designed by someone else) that we admire is...The visitor centre at the Vitra factory designed by Tadao Ando.

Our dream project is...Yet to come.

We enjoy experimenting with...Energy-efficient design technologies.

A material in construction we love...Rammed earth, for its texture.

Architects we look up to... BV Doshi, Charles Correa, Bijoy Jain, Samip Padora, Nimish Patel, Manit Rastogi, Kapil Gupta, Gurjit Singh Matharoo and amongst international firms - Alvaro Siza, John Pawson & Alberto Campo Baeza, amongst many others.

Our biggest inspiration...Mahatma Gandhi.

We owe our success to...The team at Edifice.

We would best describe ourselves as... Architects who hold six core values at the centre of our work ethic: integrity, ownership, competence, creativity, people and sensitivity towards the planet, communities, countries, environment and heritage.
