Corporate Culture

Architect Narayan and Associates creates a floor dedicated to meeting rooms for the State Bank of India Office that´s edged with sophistication.

Designing for one of the oldest Indian organisations and one of the largest ones in the sub-continent is no easy task. The office spread across 20 floors at Mumbai´s Nariman Point, the biggest requirement of the client - State Bank of India (SBI)- was a floor dedicated to meeting rooms. Architect Narayan and Associates, who were engaged to fulfil this requirement, have incorporated the best technology, software, and the latest design and with futuristic approach in the interior design of this floor.

Diverse styles
Being a bank, SBI not just has a large footprint across the country, but is an important part of the life of millions of people, across diverse backgrounds, geographical locations, income groups, professions and educational qualifications. This diversity is what the design team has attempted to showcase in the interiors. ´When we first met the client, the only brief was to give maximum utility of space, which meant having meeting rooms with various sizes,´ says Architect RL Narayan, Principal Architect. His team worked on this and overcame the challenges posed by the old building structure and managed to plan around 20 meeting rooms of different sizes on the 10th floor of the building. The rooms are aligned keeping in mind the North-South orientation of the building. The theme of showcasing the diversity of its customer base across the country has been incorporated in the design through the names of the meeting rooms and selection of artefacts. The best sound proofing systems have also been applied to ensure ease of work.

Material effect
The use of material has been particularly chosen to ensure that these materials are modern with the best quality of acoustic absorption for floors, walls and celling, with easy maintenance. The texture used in each room varies, from fabric to glass, and complements the modernistic visuals of the space. All the furniture is handmade by the skilled Indian workers and craftsmen to ensure superior quality and finishes. The USP of the design is the use of modern materials with technology, and the integration of the two with rich Indian art and culture.

Customer interface
There are three reception areas on the floor, each making a grand first impression. The largest reception area has wooden circular elements that are suspended from the ceiling and uplighters to add to the drama. A wood and metal jaali with specialised lighting is another highlight of this reception area that provides seating on high back couches. Suspended downlighters above the reception desk add to the décor and facilitate enough light to carry out the required functions.

The smaller receptions have cove lighting with dimer systems that allow subtle and even light lending a professional yet moody aura to the space.

Brightening it up
Lighting in all the large rooms is done with dimmers integrated with automated lighting, making it conducive to meetings and ensuring a good comfort level. An experience centre or lounge has been designed, which flaunts triangular wooden cut outs placed at various angles with light coming through them on the ceiling. Combining Indian-ness with modern design and technology, this meeting room floor of the SBI office designed to floor every visitor.
