King´s lifestyle

Form Space N Design Architects has experimented with materials to give this king-size apartment for their clients in Mumbai a royal look.
This sprawling 3,500 sq ft residence in Mulund, Mumbai, is an amalgamation of two 3-BHK apartments to form one 5-BHK home for a nuclear family. Though space wasn´t an issue here, challenges came in the form of optimum space utilisation with minimum maintenance. Further, it was imperative to optimise the 360-degree view from the 26th floor, which the 5 ft balconies afforded.

Light and dark
With the abundance of natural light and space, Sohil Valia and Rajesh Kathe, Principal Architects, Form Space N Design Architects, took the liberty to use dark grey Italian marble flooring with strategic lighting to highlight specific areas. The entrance is adorned with a huge backlit onyx resting on a laminate finished shoe rack, which sets the tone for the royalty of design one can expect on the other side of the door.

The flooring is in a combination of dark grey and beige Italian marble with inlay work of a barcode strip design. This element is repeated on the main door security grill and also performs a highlighting function in the living room.

Spatial creativity
This formal living room has a variety of seating arrangements and the textured wallpaper is clad on the walls and the ceiling where a metallic finish MS jaali designed with staggered MS flat strips creates a vertical barcode design highlighting the seating zone efficiently. ´A simple ceiling with zinc texture focuses on the formal seating with a slit for indirect lights above and a wallpaper finished ceiling above the day bed blends the overall look and feel of the room´ shares Valia.

The kitchen and dining were planned to be equidistant from both ends of the apartment. ´The glass sliding window in between the dining and kitchen gives a feel of openness to both the areas and helps separate the sections as and when required,´ says Valia. The serving console is made up of a variety of materials such as Corian top, veneer-finished storage shutters, mother-of-pearl above the shutters and indirect light underneath the platform.

The dining table is finished in straight oak veneer with an open grain effect in water-based poly urethane coat in a specific colour and a 12mm thick clear glass to protect the top surface. Two chairs finished in yellow PU add character to the room.

Bedtime stories
The parent´s room is washed in warm tones while the daughter´s room uses shades of orange for a young look. The master bedroom has an inlayed step up flooring, with a repeated form of design with vinyl cut outs on the ceiling. Bed is veneer with lamination finish. The son´s bedroom adorns a black portoro Italian marble flooring that compliments the hues of brown encompassing the décor in different form, feel and texture. A free-standing Corian finished bed forms the highlight of the room, with unconventional metal backrests finished in metallic grey rexine. The textured wallpaper and a cluster of white bulbs forming the hanging light create a warm environment.

Entertainment in style
The highlight of the house, however, is the entertainment room where a large U-shaped seating arrangement has been created, which is modular in parts for flexible seating. The theatre also houses a 12mm thick cork flooring with side walls in blue paint with 12mm thick MDF squares of 12´ x 12´ size, finished with Dune texture by Asian paints. The resulting effect is that of twinkling stars. A multipurpose unit comprising squares and rectangles in varying depths and heights create an interesting geometrical composition, breaking the barriers of an innovative storage box and creating a contrasting language to the smooth ellipses in the room.
Bundling up all the comforts without compromising on the aesthetics, this home is a beautiful piece of design.
