Design Diva

The design of Taj’s newest baby, the Vivanta by Taj-Surya has taken Coimbatore by storm, offering glimpses of local culture in a contemporary setting.

The name ‘Vivanta’ draws its inspiration from the term bon vivant, signifying vividness, vivacity sophistication and appreciation for the good things in life. And the Vivanta by Taj-Surya in Coimbatore offers just that! Designed by Bengaluru-based architect Thomas Associates and designer David Dunphy of HFA Hospitality Focus Solutions, USA, the entire design ensemble of this hotel is an ode to the warmth of Surya, the Sun.

Warm and welcoming

Walk into the lobby of this contemporary hotel and you are greeted by the design tour de force, the dramatic elliptical lobby characterised by a large water feature and a seating element that becomes the centrepiece, while a monumentally scaled chandelier resembling falling rain overlooks it from above. Concentric bands of marble radiate from this feature like ripples in a pond, and shards of stone in the floor reflect the rays of the sun. All the elements of the lobby, including the front desk and the glossy onyx walls, orbit around this feature.

Roomy comfort

From the lobby, 10-inch high bronze screens set in marble offer guests veiled views of the surrounding areas of the hotel. Passages to adjacent areas are framed with free standing sculptural wood portals that act as gateways, inviting guests to enter and explore the other amenities of the hotel. The hotel is equipped with 180 elegant rooms, of which the Deluxe Delight suites have a private sit-out in close proximity to the pool, while Nirvana, the Presidential suite on the ninth floor, has a large dining area, kitchenette and elegant bathrooms, and a spectacular view of the city’s skyline.

Going gourmet

No hotel is complete without the exotic aromas and flavours emanating from the restaurants that cater to different palates. At Vivanta, the fine dining restaurant ‘Red Pearl’ is a modern yet elemental space designed with natural materials like slate and wooden floors, wood-slate walls and ceilings, and rich, dry stacked stone walls that all appear to have been assembled by hand. Crimson and ebony seating, banquettes under a suspended wood trellis, high backed settees and a sequestered circular private dining area offer guests a wide variety of seating choices for their dining experience.

In contrast,‘Tease’ is a high-energy bar offering drinks, music and entertainment for guests looking to have a good time. The luminous island bar has back lit onyx panels and a custom multi-tiered chandelier that evokes an abstract of the sun and emits a warm glow. Macassar ebony, waxed plaster and fully upholstered leather walls along with Italian marble flooring offset this glow to create an irresistible ambience for the restaurant.

The hotel also has an all-day dining restaurant ‘Latitude’, with floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides offering fantastic views. The windows allow natural light to flood the interiors and highlight the rich wood flooring throughout. Woven upholstery-backed seating with turmeric-coloured accents and saffron-toned window treatments with intricate patterns bring in the culture of Coimbatore and its large and vibrant textile industry while recalling some of the spices used in the local food. A large, adjoining outdoor dining terrace allows guests to take advantage of the climate in the cooler months of the year.

Having a ball!

The ballroom and meeting facilities in the hotel carry forward the theme of sunlit warmth with their palette of materials. There are rich, carved wood doors inscribed with a circular motif, full length barrel vaulted ceilings finished with a golden tint that soar over 22 feet in height, and rich Axminster carpets rendered in cinnamon and saffron tones with room-sized decorative graphic patterns that create a dramatic backdrop.

On the whole, the hotel is a veritable platform for an array of experiences for the global traveller – an experience unparalleled by any other in Coimbatore!
