First Word

11/11/11 was a date much bandied about with its once-in-a-century occurrence. And as 2011 draws to a close, we close this year with a propitious offering: the Khalsa Heritage Centre at Anandpur Sahib, the holy city of the Sikhs - a museum designed by Moshe Safdie. After much controversy and overshot budgets, it has finally opened! Safdie's signature curves rising dramatically from open spaces make this project come to life. There are various interpretations of the architecture: Some feel the structure looks like two hands that come together to pray to the skies, some see nature's inspiration in it, while for others it is simply a structure that is iconic of the strength of the Sikhs. To us, it's an architectural marvel.

Talking about marvels, the Samode Safari Lodge at the Bandhavgarh National Park designed by Pradeep Sachdeva Design Associates, is amazing. Bringing luxury this close to nature is a feat that can be achieved only with a good design and a commitment to the cause. PSDA has accomplished this with panache.

Style is subjective and no more confined to larger cities. A home designed by Mumbai-based KNS Architects in Surat with a completely international look and feel is testimony to it. Add to it with an intelligent design that protects the home from floods and make it a perfect haven. The requirement of the client is of utmost importance, and to deliver on that is an architect's skill. Perfecting this is the ABM Architects' designed office for Emco, which reflects the client's image of an established company with a timeless design in a contemporary setting.

Moving ahead, we have a fabulous new restaurant in Delhi - Barka - designed by Mumbai-based designer Mrinmoy Chang. Infusing his creativity to create a Mediterranean setting, which appears like a caravan halt with white tents, flowing drapes and subdued lighting, Chang is sure to delight visitors with his design. Another delight is our global section. This month we feature not one, not two, but six global projects - all winners of the World Festival of Interiors held in Barcelona this year. Go ahead and indulge!

I wish you fortune, favour, friendship and fun in the New Year! Happy 2012!
