Dan Kwan of USA-based Wilson Associates stirs up a pretty Turkish delight in the name of The Marmara Taksim a landmark hotel in Istanbul.
When a landmark gets refurbished, it turns into a historical landmark. Creating this history is the renovated avatar of The Marmara Taksim, a palatial hotel that now offers a modern take on Turkish culture
and art. Designed by hospitality experts, Wilson Associates and led by Dan Kwan, the hotel is clearly inspired by the local crafts as it reflects the aura created by Turkish colours and motifs. In the words of Kwan, 'It is a refreshing celebration of the local feeling with an edgy touch of international standards, something that the world recognises as the New Istanbul.'
Twists and turns
Colours borrowed from the vibrant Ottoman Kaftans (robes) have been beau¡tifully weaved into every aspect of the hotel. The generous use of the colour red in the lobby evokes warm feelings of passion, love and desire. It also highlights the formal sleek and chic black look of the lobby. However, synonymous with the Taksim district, music is the main dTcor theme. One of the most prominent examples of this local art is the majestic revolving door that when turned, triggers a chandlier to revolve too, breaking into what the designers call, the Turkish culture dance 'Whirling Dervish'. The modern twist to the 'Whirling Dervish' is married to the ceiling glass, Art of Light, in the lobby.
Blue, brown and beyond
The stone, wood and other materials used in the dTcor give it an unmatched natural and fresh feel. Inspired by the harvest and autumn seasons, with the use of blue and brown tones, Dan Kwan ensures that the guests feel they are in the comfort of their own homes. The celebration dance of the lobby spreads its liveliness into the ballroom too with yet another play of art and movement in the ceiling.
The Tuti Restaurant is brought to life with colours that include masculine browns, prestigious golds, fresh blues and mysterious blacks. With its five-star 'street food' concept, the Tuti Restaurant's Turkish motif partition and natural wood furniture treats guests to a completely authentic dining experience. Poetry and prose are served up through The Marmara Taksim's renewed kitchen and dishes. The Chocolatier has the influence of everyone's dream of a fairy tale wedding cake while the Exective Lounge has a strong nature influence. The Panaroma restaurant presents a delightful view, besides a show kitchen with a play of metal curtains, texture and organic furniture pieces that dot the space.
A fantastic fusion of Turkish culture with exquisite international design standards, the new Marmara Taksim is a definite winner when it comes to pleasing its guests.
